Some things in life are just easy. They take almost no effort at all. Like breathing. It comes so naturally that your body just does it and you don't even have to think about it. Unless, of course, you're trying to calm yourself after you realize you still have over $120 left to use in the auction with only two RBs on your roster and the top talent is already gone.
And drafting. Drafting is easy, right? Each one of you went in there on Sunday night with a head full of hope and $200 in your pocket and you came away with 15 players. Look at you go. See. Easy.
But you wanna know what else is easy, or at least it's going to be? Defeating all of you.
DEFEAT THE COMMISH
I've just finished updating the website with the first round of roster submissions in the Defeat The Commish challenge. All 4 of them.
Look, I get it. I really do. It's a daunting thought, taking on the Commish. It's not for the faint of heart. But I sincerely didn't believe nearly all of you would be so overcome with fear that you would duck out before the contest even begins.
The good news is that there's still time if you can find it in yourself to summon the courage and throw your hat in the ring. Just head on over to the website and submit your Defeat The Commish roster. You've got nothing to lose...except the contest.
2021 SAGEBRUSH CACTUS DRAFT
One of the more interesting observations that I took away from this year's draft is that, as a group, you were not as frugal as I anticipated you'd be. With the changes to the rules regarding free agency, I was expecting to see some more bargains as owners would surely be mindful to conserve some of their auction budget to use throughout the season.
To be sure, there were some bargains. Big names like Davante Adams, Dalvin Cook, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and Travis Kelce were all drafted for less this year than last. And Drew Brees, who went for $6 last year, didn't even get drafted at all!?!
But, as a whole, you guys spent more money under the new rules than you did in the past. After the 2019 draft was completed, we saw a total of $39 go unspent. At the end of the 2020 draft, the total unspent money was $41. But, at the end of this year's draft, owners left only $25 on the table to use towards their free agents. I guess you guys have deeper pockets than I thought.
I'm sure you can imagine the deluge of emails and texts I've received since the draft: "Hey Commish, how did I do?", "What do you think of my team?", "Does this look infected to you?", and "That was a mock draft, right?"
Well, since you asked, here's how you did:
Now, before you get all worked up, the grades and scores above are not based on my opinion. They're carefully calculated using the ESPN player projections, FantasyPros Expert Consensus Ranking (ECR), positional scarcity factors, a squirrel named Pete, and some used keno betting slips.
PRE-SEASON POWER RANKINGS
If you don't like what you see above, you might want to look at the pre-season Power Rankings that I just published on the site. There's no guarantee that you'll like those either, but they do take into account more info than just your draft score. Your rank also includes projected strength of schedule, average weekly score (projected and historical), 2020 record, bye weeks, projected average high/low scores, and your average number of likes on Facebook.
Once I've combined all of those factors, I like to let them simmer on medium-high for about 15 minutes before straining them through a cheese cloth and finishing with a mint garnish.
PIGSKIN PICK'EM
I also just want to insert a quick reminder about the Pigskin Pick'Em contest for our league. Currently, I show 8 entries in our group which means that 4 of you haven't joined. And that's OK with me, but I'll remind you that you already paid to be included in this challenge when you paid your league fee. So you might as well get in there and see if you can win the prize money. Ya neva know!
Additionally, one owner committed the cardinal sin of leaving their 8th grade nickname as their entry name. I wouldn't dare embarrass this person by calling them out in front of the league, but I'm sure they'll soon see the error of their ways and change their entry name to be the same as their SCL team name. They certainly can appreciate how much easier it is for me to keep the records straight on the website when things match up and it's not like I asked them to do it in my previous instructions. Oh, wait - I did.
Finally, I'm looking forward to watching you clowns make complete fools of yourselves as you try to navigate through the season. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Good luck in week 1!
-- Commish
