Falling, Flailing, and Failing

Updated: Oct 20, 2020

You and I both know that you're trying to recite that title as quickly as you can. Admit it.

First off, I should apologize (because Mrs. Commish is making me) for the lack of communication over the past week or so. But, now that I'm back in the saddle, it looks like I missed some great action this week.

One of the first things that caught my eye was the matchup between Pork Chop Express and Thunda Buddies. These two powerhouse teams faced off with Cactus division supremacy on the line. The Pork Chops entered the game as the only remaining undefeated team in the league, but Thunda Buddies were ready and delivered an outstanding 170-point performance. And, before you ask, no, that is not one of the top-10 scores in league history.

Despite losing the game, Deshaun Watson's 42 points led Thunda Buddies to victory.

While the Pork Chop Express flailed a little this week, I expect they get that train back on track. I'm looking forward to a rematch with Thunda Buddies assuming they meet up again in the playoffs. I think the odds are good that they do, but more about that later.

Over the past couple of weeks, one team that has been falling is the Golden Tate Warriors. Just 3 short weeks ago, the Warriors were celebrating their 100th all-time victory and they were sitting atop the Sagebrush division. Undefeated after 4 weeks, and averaging over 128 points per week, every indicator suggested they were going to have a great season.

This week, however, Golden Tate would probably like to forget that they've just suffered their 100th all-time loss. To make matters worse, they're average score has fallen to just 67 points per week and they took an early exit in the Survivor Challenge.

On a side note, has anyone paid any attention to the journey that Joe Burrow has made throughout our league this season?

Joe Burrow has no idea what team he's on this week.

Burrow was drafted by the Golden Tate Warriors and released just 2 days later. As soon as he cleared waivers, Burrow was acquired by Chief Sticky Balls only to be dropped 3 days after that. Seven days after being dropped by the Balls, he was re-acquired by them off of waivers (yes, they spent $14 to pick up a guy they just dropped). And the pièce de résistance is that Chief Sticky Balls then traded Joe Burrow to - you guessed it - Golden Tate Warriors. To recap: Burrow was drafted, dropped, acquired, dropped, re-acquired, and traded back to the team that originally drafted him within a 4 week period.

Getting back on topic, we may as well talk about the teams that are failing: Who Is You and NH Bounty Hunters. Who Is You has had glimpses of success as they've won 1 game and have been within 5 points in a pair of others. NH Bounty Hunters, on the other hand, have barely been within 10 points of a win so far this season. Sitting at 0-6 already and looking at a roster full of bye week players, I'm afraid they may be waiting a bit longer to get on the board.

One team that doesn't appear to be falling, flailing, or failing is Christian McMingle. They are currently on a 4-game winning streak despite posting their lowest score of the season this week, 99. If you're thinking that sounds pretty high for a low-score on the season, you're right. The only team better is Pork Chop Express with 107 points as their lowest score.

Oh, and did I mention that McMingle should be getting the Christian part back sometime in the next few weeks?

And now for the part of this article you've all been waiting for - or, maybe not, depending on your record.

I give you my annual analysis of your odds to win based on your record after 6 weeks:

Year after year, I get those questions: "Hey Commish, will I win the Championship?", "Dear Leader, will I make the playoffs?", "Oh Learned One, I'm OK even though I'm 0-6, right?".

And to those, I have one answer: No, you won't make the playoffs. But if you want the proof, read the data for yourself.

There is, however, one teeny tiny tidbit some of you will find interesting. Perhaps you noticed that 2.5% of teams that started 2-4 won the Championship Game. For all of you math majors out there, 2.5% of 40 is 1. Only one team that has ever begun their season 2-4 managed to win it all. That team was Chief Sticky Balls. Last season. It can be done. But, probably not by you.

Finally, I am still waiting for 2 league members to submit their votes regarding the use of reserve players to address the COVID-19 issues. You know who you are. And if you don't, check your email inbox because I just sent you a reminder.

I took this week off, but I'm looking forward to getting back to my winning ways.

It was a close call this week with Thunda Buddies scoring 170 points, but alas, my waiver team still managed to outscore them.

Good luck in week 7!
