Another week in the NFL and another great performance for Patrick Mahomes (42 pts). By halftime against the Raiders on Sunday, Mahomes already had 313 passing yards and 4 TD in leading Who Is You to another solid victory. Weirdly, there was no scoring in the second half of that game. I think they called the game and everyone just went home.
Without a doubt, keeping Mahomes for $12 is looking like the bargain of the year so far. And, if you're Who Is You, you're probably drooling over the fact that if he finishes as a top 5 QB in fantasy again this season, he'll be able to use his Groupon and keep him at a cost of only $22 in 2020.
It would be easy to assume that Mahomes' big day topped week 2, but you'd be wrong. The best score of the week belongs to Chief Sticky Balls' defense, the New England Patriots. Realizing we're only in the second week of the season, the Patriots 49 pts leads the league as the highest single score so far. Yes, a defense is the top scoring player on the season right now.
So how does this Patriots performance rank outside of this season? Glad you asked.
It's impressive, no doubt. But, it appears to fall just outside of, at least, the top 15 highest single game scores in league history. The reason I don't know the exact rank is because, in all of their wisdom, ESPN eliminated the individual player matchup details in the league history. More about that later this week.
However, in my limited research, it does appear it was the 3rd best defensive performance of all-time. The top honors went to the Seattle Seahawks in week 14 of 2012 when they put up 58 pts on the Arizona Cardinals. The 2nd best defensive performance of all-time belongs to the San Francisco 49ers who laid 53 pts on the St. Louis Rams in week 4 of the 2009 season.
Finally, a quick note about this website. Because the content on this site is fed in through a variety of linked databases and spreadsheets, information is updated in real-time as I make changes to the data. Therefore, I will tell you that if you're reading these weekly recap posts, you can be sure that the data has been completely updated.
However, if you're looking at website data on Sunday, Monday, or even early Tuesday morning, it may not yet be completely updated. Bottom line, if you see the weekly recap posted, data is valid. If not, buyer beware.
I was happy to finish 4-2 in my picks this week after last week's disastrous start. Further, it looks like I picked the correct game as the Matchup Of The Week, but Flash Dem TD's somehow forgot to win. That's twice this season they've made me look bad. But, joke's on them since they were eliminated from the Survivor Challenge this week. Karma is a bitch.
With Chief Sticky Balls putting up 167 pts this week, it took a bit more digging to top. This week, there were only 2 players in the top 10 of the WR scoring list that are free agents. Compare that to last week where we saw 7 of the top 10 scores at the WR position were unclaimed. But, alas, there are always options out there. To the best of my recollection, in league history, there have only been about 3 or 4 team scores that weren't topped by the Waiver Wire Team That Beat You.
Good luck in week 3!
