One of the best things about our league is that it's dynamic. Change is good and it's one of the most effective tools we have to keep our league from going stale. We've all been in those leagues where year after year it's the same members, same rules, same challenges...blah, blah, blah.
This season we added an entirely new league - SCL Segundo - and created a system where teams can be relegated and promoted between the two leagues based on their final ranking. And it's been great so far.
But, throughout the season, I couldn't help but feel that something was missing. Eventually, I realized there was no genuine inter-league interaction. Sure, we had the Golden Ticket or Pigskin Pick'Em challenges, but those are so broad they don't really feel like a competition between the two leagues, just owners competing as individuals.
Well, get ready. Next season, we're introducing the SCL Pro Bowl.
That's right, the Sagebrush Cactus League and SCL Segundo League will battle next year!
How it works:
The SCL Pro Bowl will be played in week 18 of the NFL season. After our league playoffs end, the champions from each league will participate in a live draft via video conference and create a Pro Bowl team to represent their league. The draft will be a snake format - the only time you'll ever see me use that draft format - and it will only involve those two owners. However, all league members are encouraged to spectate and cheer or jeer them on.
The Sagebrush Cactus and SCL Segundo Pro Bowl teams will then square off in week 18 using the Sagebrush Cactus League scoring system to find out which league is the dominant one.
"But, Commish, what if I'm not a league champion next season? What's in it for me?"
I'm glad you asked.
The winning league will not only own the bragging rights, they will also win $20 for every member in their league. Yes, you heard that right. Your league's champion will have the opportunity to win prize money for every member in their league.
And since each member in the league has the opportunity to win some extra prize money, I imagine our league champions will want to consult with their counterparts to help them come up with a winning strategy for the draft. After all, if people stand to gain a prize, they're sure to give you good advice, right?
To accomplish this without increasing our league fees, I've restructured the prizes for next season.
2023 PRIZE SCHEDULE
First Place: SCL $900, Segundo $500
Second Place: SCL $500, Segundo $250
Third Place: SCL $250, Segundo $150
Consolation Winner: SCL $150, Segundo $75
Weekly High Score: SCL $15, Segundo $10
Weekly High Score - Loss: SCL $10, Segundo $5
Weekly Low Score - Win: SCL $10, Segundo $5
Survivor Challenge: SCL $150, Segundo $75
Eliminator Challenge: $100
Pigskin Pick'Em: $200
Golden Ticket Challenge: $200
Pro Bowl: $20 per team in the winning league ($240)
As you can see, the league playoff prizes didn't change. The prizes that changed were the Eliminator, Pigskin Pick'Em, and Golden Ticket.
The biggest change was in the Eliminator Challenge. After this season, when that challenge ended in week 4, I realized that a $250 prize was simply too much for a contest that was over as soon as it started. Since it's a one-and-done type of challenge, I decided to bring it more in line with the Survivor prizes since they're somewhat similar.
Also, the Pick'Em and Golden Ticket were reduced from $250 to $200 each.
I'm looking forward to this new contest and I'm excited to see the two leagues finally meet and settle their differences on the field.
Best,
-- Commish
