Some of you started your season off on the right foot. Others? Not so much.
Making the list of Results That No Longer Surprise Me, Christian McMingle toppled Badazz Bri by 88 points. Maybe it was stubbornness, maybe it was me being wishful for a good game, but I certainly thought there was no way that Bri would get blown out on their own field after the last two drubbings. I was wrong. If anything, I guess Badazz Bri fans could make the claim for a moral victory since they held McMingle to less than 200 points this time around. I should also note that I expect to receive a scheduling request from McMingle to play Bri 14 times next season.
Another team that shouldn't surprise anyone is Who Is You. The defending champs just fired a shot over the bow of everyone in the league with their commanding victory over a hopeful Bounty Hunters team, 169 to 96. The message: taking the title away from them is not going to be an easy task.
"Hey Lutz. Loser of the rookie bowl has to shave their legs. Bet?" - Jergoff Passout
In The Beginner's Bowl, Do Not Panic teased Jergoff Passout for a bit before taking a big lead and closing out the game, 140-114. Their 140-point inaugural performance was the 3rd highest score in the league this week and was the second highest in league history for a rookie owner, falling significantly short of the record of 186 points held by NH Bounty Hunters in week 1 of the 2013 season. An outing like that tells me that the preseason projections were way off and the rest of the league would be wise to disregard them. This Panic team is one that I'll have my eye on as a dark horse coming out of the Sagebrush division.
Starting the season at the bottom of the heap is, the aforementioned, Badazz Bri along with Los Perros Locos, Chief Sticky Balls and NH Bounty Hunters. None of these teams eclipsed the 100-point mark which is usually a sign that it's going to be a long season. But the good news is that they all play each other next week, so two of them will come out with a victory.
As is common after first week of the season, there were some big movers in the Power Rankings. On the heals of their solid victories, McMingle and You took over the top two spots, moving up 3 and 4 ranks, respectively. Baby Got Dak and Do Not Panic moved up 3 spots each while their opponents, Los Perros Locos and Thunda Buddies dropped 3 spots. The most significant drop in the rankings was Chief Sticky Balls, who dropped 4 spots from number 1 to number 5. But, I'd be careful to read too much into that...I don't think that will last long.
DEFEAT THE COMMISH
What a sweet treat it was to return from my vacation and find that I defeated not one, not two, but three of you. If I'm being honest, which I always am, it was a bit surprising. I truly expected a few weeks to go by before I laid waste to my first victim. So you can imagine my glee in the fact that I get to select 3 players to add to my roster.
"I question the commish lineup.. but he probably knows something we don't" - Christian McMingle
I really hope the rest of you guys aren't gonna quit early on me. I'd appreciate it if this contest was a bit more challenging and lasted more than a few weeks. It gives me something to do besides write these posts.
Here are the teams I defeated and the players I chose:
Golden Tate Warriors - Christian McCaffrey
Badazz Bri - Alvin Kamara
Chief Sticky Balls - Travis Kelce
SURVIVOR CHALLENGE
Heading into the Monday Night Football game, the Los Perros Locos needed 12 pts from their Ravens D/ST to avoid elimination. Had the Ravens D/ST scored 11 points, that would've put Perros into a tie with Badazz Bri for the lowest score in the league. With the tie-breaker being QB points, they actually would've lost to Bri's QB, Aaron Rodgers, who had a colossal 1-point outing on Sunday.
But none of that mattered after all. By the end of the Monday Night game, the Los Perros Locos would finish the week with a woeful, league-low, 58 points and find themselves the first team eliminated from the Survivor Challenge.
PIGSKIN PICK'EM
In addition to their stellar week 1 performances, Who Is You and Christian McMingle also took top honors in the Pick'Em contest this week with 10 correct picks. Getting off to a good start in this contest is crucial because it gives you the freedom to get a little more creative with your future picks and take on extra risk.
And speaking of risk, Do Not Panic certainly appears to like living on the edge. There's nothing more exciting that trying to catch the rest of the pack after you only select a single game in week 1. But hey, like their moniker suggests, there's nothing to worry about. A couple of undefeated weeks in a row and they'll be right back in this thing.
COMMISH'S PICKS
Touché, gang. While I may have done well in the Defeat The Commish contest, most of you certainly got the better of me in my picks. Well played. My 2-4 record this week was not my proudest moment, but I look forward to many 5 or 6 correct picks in the weeks to come.
Good luck in week 2!
-- Commish
